My series Waanplekken (Delusional Places) is an ongoing project which started in 2016. It is about sublime landscapes: where you get overwhelmed by enormous beauty. In images I try to represent the feelings that these places stir in me. In doing so, I tread a modern path in a tradition already centuries old (like Romanticism and traditional landscape photography). A tradition I admire and criticize at the same time. Because transcendental nature cannot be captured with documentation in my opinion, I use the method of staging in order to depict my feelings. Because documenting nature remains a desire, I find myself in a position where I seek association between this desire and the criticism I have on it.
In this project I create landscapes in my studio, which I build up with different (sometimes household) materials and liquids. These places originate from my mind or grow in front of the camera. For the first works (2016) I made pictures in the outside nature, which I extremely abstracted to achieve the representation of my feelings of that particular place.
All the works are numbered and divided in different topics, like chapters in a book. The videoworks in this series are combined in a separate section.
